August Valentinesen sought adventure like his Viking ancestors. Christine Benson dazzled Copenhagen's high society with her magnificent dresses. James Olsen battled thieves and rescued damsels--even when they were not in distress. The Folkman brothers grappled with the loss of precious loved ones. Life in Denmark rolled on in predictable, customary ways, as it had for centuries.
Then, all that changed.
IN 1850, a storm raged across Denmark--not a tumult of rain or snow but a clash of words and ideas. Awakened from century's old slumber, some Danes embraced this message. Others fought against it. Mobs burned homes and broke bones. Heroes stood tall, faith prevailed, and ordinary men and women transformed into sants.
This is their story.
